History of Colombia in Brief

The territory of Colombia has been home to the oldest civilizations. These include Sinu, Taynana, Musica, and the Inca Empire. Although the country is named after Christopher Columbus, he has never actually set foot in this country. Colonized by Spanish commanders in the 16th century, the country remained a colony until Napoleon’s invasion of Spain in the nineteenth century. The Colombian people, who rebelled against colonialism and oppression, started a war of independence and won this war in 1886 and ensured the proclamation of the Republic of Colombia.

Due to its physical differences, the country is divided into three parts: the eastern region, its coasts and mountains. It is also notable as the only country in South America that has a coast to both oceans.
